Meet Brandon Duncan, aka Tiny Doo, a San Diego rapper who’s currently in jail awaiting his Dec. 4 trial. But get this, it’s for a crime that even prosecutors say he didn’t commit. Duncan has no criminal record. So what’s he guilty of then?
Prosecutors are charging Duncan with attempted murder in connection with nine shootings dating back to April 2013.
Duncan’s not accused of taking part in the shootings. The charges are in connection with his album No Safety. “We’re not just talking about a CD of anything, of love songs.” Deputy District Attorney Anthony Campagna said to ABC 10. “We’re talking about a CD cover ... there is a revolver with bullets.”
Citing a rarely used state law from 2000, authorities say he’s guilty because he benefited from the shootings through album sales because the shootings helped his gang, the Lincoln Park Bloods, gain status.
Prosecutors are also citing the fact that Duncan was pictured on social media with some of the other 14 gang members accused of taking part in the shootings.
What’s the deal? Martin Scorsese researches the crap out of criminal behavior for box office profits, and countless other rappers have built their careers on documenting the realities of street life, lifting themselves and their families out of poverty in the process.
So watch out Tim Cook, before you too are accused of being guilty by association.
